My kids are on SPRING BREAK which means I have to juggle their fun with MY work. lol.
I really can’t complain. It’s been nonstop ice cream, kite-flying, movies, and video games. Honestly, it’s been spectacular.
COMING UP!
Well, first off, next week! New Green Lantern, issue 10!
LET’S UNBOX IT WITH THE HELP OF MY KIDS!
Here’s the sneak preview!
Excitttinnnngggg!
We’ve got a lot more coming up. This issue will be the first appearance of a few different characters/ideas. Being able to add to the “toybox” of comic books has been one of those life long dreams I don’t think I knew I had until I started writing.
In other comic news
Some of my friends over at GHOST MACHINE have a couple of books out, that I think would be worth your time.
CRAFT SERVICES
The past weekend, I was at WonderCon along with a bevy of other nerds. It’s always a great time to see old friends, meet fans, etc.
But something struck me this time.
It seems that the conventions closer to Los Angeles, have a bit of a triggering effect on me.
It’s the moment my two worlds collide. Comics and Television/film. And with that, comes a lot of strange emotions.
Some good, MOSTLY bad.
There’s gratitude, envy, competitiveness, and dealing with the ever-present black hole of self-doubt that shows up when talking to others in your field.
The truth is, the impossibility of making a living at writing, this job is incredibly hard
We live in a deserted wasteland of pilots and spec scripts, occasionally punctuated by a sale, staffing position, or odd job.
Friends and acquaintances are trying to move ahead and “Make it.” Everyone is wondering if the other person in front of them can “help” them make their dreams come true.
Because of that, there’s a bit of competition between us all, and that often leaves me feeling…well…YUCKY.
But why? Because sometimes, we forget to be…GENUINE.
We’ve all been there. We’ve all been out of work. Struggling. But that doesn’t give you the license to treat someone doing well as a tool just to get ahead.
I was reminded of that this past weekend. I was reminded of the relationships that matter in this industry.
I’ve found that those that have helped me, often do so YEARS down the line. And as I’ve been here long enough, I do the same.
It’s mostly an act of self-protection. It’s a way to weed out the people who are talking to you because of your position from the ones who actually want to get to know you.
So, I encourage you to get to know the people around you. Your career in Hollywood is going to be LONG (hopefully), and you can only make it by having genuine relationships.
The collective Experience, Strength, and Hope will buoy you during the good and bad times.
What’s great is that when you stop looking at people as stepping stones, you’ll begin to see them as they are.
Dreamers like you.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I hope you can continue to maintain your community in the workplace (as well as church, of course :) ), and build up the next generation so they are healthier!
And can't wait for more GL and more projects in general!
